Philanthropy from Ancient Bhārat!

नमस्ते! Hope that you are SAFE and AT HOME. So, Here I am back with another gem from Ancient Bhārat. Here it is :-

रविश्चन्द्रो घना वृक्षा नदी गावश्च सज्जनाः।

एते परोपकाराय युगे दैवेन निर्मिताः॥

raviścandro ghanā vṛkṣā nadī gāvaśca sajjanāḥ।
ete paropakārāya yuge daivena nirmitāḥ॥

अनुवादः

The Sun, Moon, Dense Trees (i.e. Forest), River, Cows as well as Noble-People – these six have been created by Divine People in this era for philanthropy.

अर्थ-विस्तारः

Just like all other subhāṣitas we went through in our voyage, in this subhāṣita, the ocean is contained. The poet in this verse has smartly announced that Sun, Moon, Dense Forests, Rivers, Cows and Noble-People – these 6 things will always do philanthropy. And along with that he announced them to do so… So Let’s Look in parts!!!

रविः

The Sun is the eternal source of energy to this world. All the life thrives on Earth due to Sun only. In one of the prayers of Rigveda (5.82.5), The Lord is prayed to take away all that is unbeneficial and bless with all that is good. Does it ever say like “I wanna have a Sun-Bath. Tomorrow, I ain’t rising.” – Nah!

चन्द्रः 🌙

The Moon is like the source of Coolness to both our eyes and the world. There are many flowers which blossom during night. Without it, the tides would have been impossible.

घना वृक्षाः 🌳🌳🌳🌳

The third thing poet has talked upon are trees. We are live examples of grace of trees’ philanthropy. Without them, our existence has no clue! They have been serving us for long and now it seems as if the time, of we serving them is coming near. If they are, then we are.

नदी 🌊🌊🌊

Rivers are like elixir for us as they are the best source of Fresh Water to us. Not just us, but it forms base of existence of each living organism on the earth. It never acts like : “I won’t give my water to him.”- Does it? (Or Us? 🤔)

गावः 🐄🐄🐄

Cows – The ones whom we give the place of Mother in our Culture. We are indebted as we drink their milk for most of our life time. “I won’t give him milk. He sells are high price” Does it say such? – Nah!

सज्जनाः 😇😇😇

I know you would be thinking about me! Yes I know I am a Sajjan but am conversing about those even great. They are the ones who would never go back doing good for others. Most of us forgot to thank them, though they never halt with their good work. Let’s take a pledge to once say THANK YOU to them! That’s the only thing we can do for them till we can do things like them.

So these are the six things told by poet who will always perform philanthropy. “They do, we didn’t tell them to do so..” – “But, we can atleast thank them. It will lead to strengthening of firmness that I AM DOING RIGHT.” So, Let’s pledge? No I won’t force, and am leaving upon you.

THANK YOU FOR READING!!! I would be back with another subhāṣita from Ancient Bhārat. Till then, पुनर्मिलामः
